About this model

Design narrative Every time zone on Earth is represented as a raised tile whose height encodes the hour that zone reads at 12:00 UTC. Tiles form a 24-rung staircase running west to east; six colours group the rungs into four-hour blocks (Small Hours, Dawn, Morning, Afternoon, Evening and Midnight). Zones with half- or quarter-hour offsets sit between rungs rather than being rounded. The shapes of zone boundaries—long straight cuts, stepped coastlines and jagged borders—are preserved by using Natural Earth’s 10m time zone polygons (v5.0.0, public domain). This is a cartographic data relief: height encodes clock hour, not elevation, and Natural Earth records standard time only (no daylight saving).
