About this model
This is a 3dtopo model of the world's most famous cliff, ElCapitan. Yosemite Valley's El Capitan is a 3000 foot almost sheer vertical, sometimes overhanging, granite playground for the world's elite rock climbers. Although every crack, and many featureless blank sections, have been climbed the most popular route by far is the infamous "Nose" route. The first assent in 1958 took 47 days. The current record is less than 2 1/2 hours. I made the model from a LIDAR dataset available on The LIDAR point cloud was gridded to a 0.5m resolution. Because the data was collected from a plane some of the detail is missing on the shear vertical sections and the overhanging sections aren't rendered, so you had better not rely on this if you want to climb it.
