The egyptian scarab with geared wings is a free printable 3D model from Thingiverse by cheeseplus. I thought thing:5366891 looked nice but didn't want to add springs and rubber bands, so I printed the version without those but it was too floppy. You can download the STL file from the original listing below and print it at home.
About this model
I thought thing:5366891 looked nice but didn't want to add springs and rubber bands, so I printed the version without those but it was too floppy. So I added gearing between the two wings so they open symmetrically, which also adds enough resistance that they don't just fall open. I added some embellishments to the base, which adds some room for the gearing to hide. An extra support helps keeps the wings in place and gives a better surface for gluing the top to the base. And it also seemed weird to me that the wings emerged from under the head rather than from under the wing covers, so I flipped the top around. If you like it the other way, the top from the original models should still fit this (and vice versa).
