Alessandro Vittoria, the famous Venetian sculptor of the late XVI century, arrived in Venice and worked at the workshop of Sansovino in 1543. An extremely talented portrait painter and sculptor, Vittoria popularized a new type of portrait bust on a pedestal (usually half-figured images from the Renaissance did not have one). Here, Ottavio Grimani is depicted in a modern suit, on top of which is fixed a cloak reminiscent of ancient Roman busts, donning a certain nobility to the image. The pedestal of the bust can both indicate the public position of the person being portrayed, or create some kind of counterweight to the bust of his father in the family chapel of the church of San Sebastiano.
