In the spring of 1817, Christian Carl Friedrich August traveled with his brother Friedrich August Emil, known as the prince of the north, on a longer voyage abroad, which in 1818 brought them to Rome. Here they met Thorvaldsen. They spent the winter of 1818-1819 in Rome where Thorvaldsen created this portrait bust of the Duke. Bot hthe original model in plaster (A204) and the marble copy (A206) is housed in Thorvaldsen's Museum. The Duke was appointed Knight of the Elephant Order and Dannebrog in 1815 and his mother was the Danish Princess Louise Augusta, his older sister the Danish Queen Caroline Amalie.
