A tick stick is a traditional layout and transfer tool used by woodworkers, cabinetmakers, and boatbuilders to capture and reproduce complex shapes with absolute accuracy. Instead of measuring angles or curves directly—which often introduces small but frustrating errors—a tick stick records the exact geometry of an irregular edge, contour, or space so it can be transferred perfectly to another workpiece. The tool works by placing a reference board against the area you want to trace, then positioning the tick stick on that board and marking several “ticks” along its edges.
