Rendered life-size on a convincingly realistic bed made from marble, this impressive sculpture is one of Johan Niklas Byström's more complicated works. The sculpture depicts Juno with the infant Hercules, rarely depicted in art. The coupling of the two is the association of the protection of the newborn, as seen here with Hercules suckling on Juno's breast. The mythical theme of this suckling is considered to indicate Juno's acceptance of Hercules into Olympus: the act of suckling suggests both initiation and adoption. These 3D scans have been produced with an Artec Eva with the ambition to produce a digital representation as close to the original as possible.
