Das Gebäude war der Strecken-/Schrankenposten am Schönbacher Tunnel der Westerwaldquerbahn Herborn–Montabaur. Der Tunnel ist der 97 m lange Schönbacher bzw. Wachtköppel-Tunnel, Streckennummer 3747, Abschnitt Erdbach–Fehl-Ritzhausen. Lothar Brills Tunnelarchiv dokumentiert mehrere Aufnahmen des Nord- und Südportals aus den Jahren 1982, 1987, 2006 und 2007. Besonders wichtig: Eine Modellbau-Dokumentation nennt ausdrücklich den „Streckenposten Schönbach“ und beschreibt ihn als kleines Wärterhaus direkt am Ausgang eines Tunnels. Dahinter lagen eine Kreuzung und ein Feldweg; dort befanden sich früher zwei handbediente Schranken.
