Prevents blobs and layer shifts welding the parts together (see last photo)to provide a way to print the sword and hilt in different colors and layer heightsto be able to replace the blade when it breaksThe replacing ability comes from the pop off base I modeled into it. This is a very snug fit with only 0.15mm clearance to make sure its tight. There is a “loose” version with 0.3mm of clearance as well.
