This deep-water North Pacific fish is famous for its rich, buttery flesh and dark, almost velvety skin. Adults are typically dark gray to black on the back with a lighter underside, and can grow over a meter in length. Found on muddy bottoms at depths of 300–2700 m, it is a commercially important species, especially in Alaska and Japan (where it is known as gindara). The model is designed for clean printing and display, with attention to the characteristic elongated body, dual dorsal fins, and overall proportions of a real sablefish.
