About this model
Group of statues. A plaster cast from the Royal Cast Collection at SMK, the National Gallery of Denmark, 3D scanned by the museum. The male figure in the middle is the priest Laocoön. Serpents are biting him and his sons, killing them. The snakes were sent by the Greek gods to silence the group before they could reveal to the Trojans that the Trojan Horse was in fact a trap devised by the Greek enemy. Laocoön dies, Troy is captured by the Greeks and falls. The few surviving Trojans flee and found a new city, Rome. Ideas about free, democratic values were born from the mouth of this figure. As was the neoclassical style. This happened after Johann Joachim Winckelmann wrote, in 1764, that Laocoön, despite his pain, does not scream but sigh.
