About this model

Torso. A plaster cast from the Royal Cast Collection at SMK, the National Gallery of Denmark, 3D scanned by the museum. Copy in plaster of a sculpture depicting the goddess of the soul, Psyche (or Aphrodite, perhaps?), dating back to the 2nd Cent. BCE. When the Polish-Danish artist Elisabeth-Jerichau Baumann visited the Turkish bath in the Topkapi-palace in Istanbul in 1869, she compared the nude bodies of the women from the Harem to this sculpture (and finished off with a racist conclusion typical of her time): “- here is a Venus de Milo, over there the Medici Aphrodite, right here stands the Psyche of Capua and there are the black negresses trying in vain to wash themselves clean.” Size of the cast: 950 x mm.
