Free Thanksgiving 3D Prints: What to Make Before the Big Day

Seven weeks until Thanksgiving is the right amount of lead time. Here are seven free models, from a turkey butter mold to a pumpkin centerpiece with gratitude tags, that will actually make it to the table.

Thanksgiving is about seven weeks away. That is exactly the right amount of lead time if you want a printed piece to be ready, painted if needed, and looking deliberate rather than rushed. Start now and you can print the place card holders, let them sit, and forget about them until you set the table. Start the week before and you are printing them at midnight with a flashlight.

Thinger's Thanksgiving Decorations collection has everything from small ornaments to functional kitchen molds. Here is a curated route through it, from the thing that impresses people before dinner to the thing that gets used while you are cooking.

The centerpiece: Pumpkin Decor with Thankful Tags

The Pumpkin Decor with Leaf/Thankful Tags by lindnjoe is a layered pumpkin with a base and removable tags shaped like leaves. Each tag has space to write on, which turns an otherwise inert decoration into a table activity: everyone writes something they are grateful for and tucks a tag into the display. The layered construction means you can print it in complementary colors for the pumpkin ridges, or just one color if you want to keep it simple. Either way it reads well as a centerpiece. The "thankful" detail is what separates this from a generic fall pumpkin.

The kitchen prop: Turkey Butter Mold

This one requires a short explanation for anyone who has not seen it before. The Turkey-Butter mold by rkevinball_5591 is a mold (PLA works fine; PETG is an option if you want to be careful about heat from warm butter) that you pack with softened butter, chill in the fridge, and then unmold onto a plate at the table. The result is a butter turkey. People either find this delightful or they take a photo of it and find it delightful. Either outcome is fine. The designer updated it on Thanksgiving Day 2019, which suggests they have been serving butter turkeys at the dinner table since at least then, and the model has stayed live because it works.

The table setting: Turkey Place Card Holders

Turkey Place card holder by cerberus333 on Thingiverse is exactly what it says. Each piece is a small turkey that holds a folded name card in a slot on its back. Print one for every seat, print them in oranges and browns and a deep red, and the table has a color story before the food arrives. They are small and fast to print, which means a full set for eight people is a single print session if you have a reasonably sized bed.

The bird on display: Turkey

Turkey by All Things STL on MakerWorld is a standalone turkey figure for the table or mantelpiece. All Things STL notes that you can paint the bird in your choice of colors, and the model lends itself well to multicolor filament prints or a coat of acrylic paint after the fact. It is the kind of print that earns a quiet compliment from someone's grandmother and then lives in a box with the other holiday decorations, which is exactly the right fate for a good seasonal print.

Autumn texture for the kitchen

The Autumn Texture Rollers by makerslabcz are rolling stamp tools for baking and crafting. The set includes leaf and harvest patterns you roll into pie crust, fondant, polymer clay, or air-dry clay before baking or curing. If you are making a Thanksgiving pie from scratch, this is the print that makes the edge of the crust look intentional. If you are not making a pie, it still works on any soft material you want to texture. Two-hour print, immediate payoff at the table.

Fall scatter: Mini Acorntainers

Mini Acorntainers by MakeAnything on MyMiniFactory are small hinged acorn containers. MakeAnything describes them as "super simple to print" and "adorable containers for small items," and that is accurate. A few of these scattered down the center of the table, each holding a chocolate or a small folded note, read as thoughtful without requiring much effort. They also work as favor packaging if you want to send something home with guests. Print them in brown and tan to get the two-tone acorn look.

Wall or mantel: Fall Maple Leaves HueForge

The Fall Maple Leaves - HueForge by pezliz on MakerWorld is a multicolor print derived from photographs of actual fallen maple leaves. HueForge pieces work by using multiple filament color changes at specific layer heights to approximate the tonal variation in a photograph. Autumn leaves are a natural subject for this: the browns, oranges, and yellows map directly to filament swaps. If you have a multimaterial printer, this is a ready project. If you do not, single-color prints of the individual leaf outlines still work as wall art or small mantel pieces in the weeks leading up to the holiday.

Where to look next

All of these are in the Thanksgiving Decorations collection on Thinger, alongside more models than I had room to cover here. The collection mixes decorative and functional pieces, so there is more to browse even after this list. The free Thinger app lets you search across 600,000 free models on Printables, MakerWorld and Thingiverse at once, which makes it easier to find variations once you have a piece in mind. Thanksgiving is seven weeks out. The printer does not need much notice, but it does need some.
