About this model

In 1943, Grumman began to phase out production of the unwieldy F4F carrier fighter to prepare for the larger and more powerful F6F. However, the F6F's large size made it difficult to use on the U.S. Navy's small escort carriers. To solve this problem, General Motors (GM) was licensed by Grumman to build a variant of the F4F that could be flown from escort carriers. The result was the FM-1, an F4F-4 with two of its guns removed and the magazine capacity per gun reverted to the F4F-3's capacity. A later variant called the FM-2 was fitted with a 1,350-hp nine-cylinder engine, requiring a taller, rounded tail to counteract the torque.
