About this model

The early Bf-109G differed from the 109F only in the motor that the aircraft used. Externally, the only difference was a set of small air scoops immediately behind the prop that are there on the Gustav but absent on the Friedrich. The new engine used in the Gustav was rated for 1,280 hp, a major increase from the 1,160 hp of the Friedrich's motor. Beginning on the G-4 (Gustave Vier), a larger tailwheel was fitted. The tailwheel was made fixed because it no longer fitted the slot that its smaller predecessor on the 109F retracted into. The variants depicted here are late model 109s with 13mm machine guns replacing the 7.92mm machine guns which German pilots jokingly called "Luftwaffenanklopf-gerät" ("Air force knock-knock thing") due to its lack of hitting power.
